In this class you will learn how to carve a gourd to look like tree bark.  You will be shown how to use your burs and wood burner to get this effect.  You will have the choice of whether to put an owl/owlets or small baby animals into the carved opening in the bark.  Acrylic washes/inks will be used to colour the bark and paint your nesting resident(s).  A written tutorial and nestling pictures will be provided.

Some carving experience necessary.

Students will need to bring:  a ¼ inch thick gourd cleaned inside and out.  You may finish the inside of the gourd but do not put a finish on the outside.  Power carver; wood burner; bur for removing outer shell (I use a large Saburr tooth cylinder); undercutting wheel bur/or undercutting bur of your choice; filigree bur; Dust mask.

[If you require a gourd you may purchase one from ACP.  Some burs, burners and carvers are available to use.  Please let us know if you need to borrow a carver and/or burner to ensure we have sufficient available.]
