This gourd was made in a very interesting class in Arizona. The teacher was Mexican, and all during the class he told us stories from his culture and his background. This kept us very focused both on what he was saying, and what we were doing. He carefully took us through all the steps of painting the gourd, from painting the inside black, to adding random colour swashes across the outside before the tedious task of learning how to use black spray paint to add small patches of light paint, and then add very small dots of colour over all the surface. It sounds easy, but it was very difficult. Of course, he had mastered the technique and was very patient with us. We then created our own mask design on the front of the gourd to recreate the old designs.
