I enjoy making small, affordable hard shell gourd bowls, as I can experiment with different techniques and patterns to create a pleasing bowl. This bowl has its start when I was asked to teach a Pyrography (burning) class at the Wuertz Gourd Festival in Arizona. To teach a 3 hour class, I wanted to make sure the students would be able to complete the designs on the gourd within the assigned class time. To do this, I needed to see how long it would take me to do it, allow teaching and explanation time, and extra time for students who may struggle. The result was this gourd! The top and bottom rings have been painted on after the class, with lines of pyrography defining the edges of the rings. I added a painted wooden ring on the bottom to raise the gourd.
